We believe that developing practical cooking skills is an essential life skill that supports independence, confidence, and wellbeing.
Students learn a wide range of culinary techniques, building their skills progressively each year. They are taught the importance of preparing and cooking food safely and thoroughly, understanding hygiene, temperature control, and safe food handling. Through practical experimentation, students create a variety of dishes — from bread and savoury meals to pastry and more complex recipes — developing both creativity and technical ability.
Alongside practical skills, students gain a strong understanding of balanced and healthy diets, nutrition, and the role food plays in maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. They also explore where our food comes from, including sourcing, sustainability, and the journey from farm to fork.
In Years 10 and 11, students have the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills through the BTEC Level 1 and Level 2 qualification. This pathway allows learners to gain a recognised qualification while continuing to strengthen their practical expertise, nutritional understanding, and preparation for further education or employment.
A year 11 quote ‘I love food tech. I find it really relaxing’.
